General Psychological Evaluations and Psychological Evaluations for
Immigration Cases
General Psychological Evaluations
A general evaluation is sometimes sought to clarify a diagnosis. A person may wish to complete a psychological evaluation if they have concerns about their emotional well-being. This evaluation involves a general assessment of a person’s intellectual, emotional, social, and behavioral functioning.
Psychological Evaluations for Immigration Cases
Depending on the type of immigration case, an immigration psychological evaluation will focus on a person’s experience in relation to trauma or possible extreme hardship. This type of evaluation also covers a person’s emotional, social, and behavioral functioning.
Below are the types of immigration cases for which a psychological evaluation may be needed
Asylum
In asylum cases, the psychological evaluation helps document the events that led the applicant to flee their country and the impact these events had on the applicant’s psychological well-being.
U Visa
In U Visa cases, a psychological evaluation helps evaluate the psychological effects of having been a victim of a serious crime.
T Visa
In T Visa cases, a psychological evaluation assesses the psychological effects of having been a victim of human trafficking and how returning to their country of citizenship would result in harm.
Violence Against Woman Act (VAWA) / Spousal Abuse
In VAWA cases, a psychological evaluation can evaluate the extent of domestic abuse or extreme cruelty and the psychological impact of that abuse.
Extreme Hardship Waiver
In extreme hardship waiver or cancellation of removal cases, a psychological evaluation assesses how a relative would suffer extreme hardship if separated from the applicant or if the relative leaves the US and relocates to another country to remain with the applicant.
These topics are difficult to talk about. Remember you are the expert of your own life and you set the pace of the evaluation. You do not have to answer anything you do not want to and everything discussed will be kept confidential.
